Walking it off after a pregnancy

A woman’s body goes through many changes during its nine months of pregnancy. And there are the stretch marks, back pain and the overwhelming desire for pickles to prove it. Blame it on Heidi Klum, Madonna and every other celebrity mom who waltzes onto magazine covers looking svelte and radiant, but today’s new mom is anxious to get back to her pre-baby self as quickly as possible. Celebrity magazines aside, new moms also have to manage a new level of activity to keep up with baby.
A postnatal exercise program, at about six weeks postpartum for most women is vital. Walking is one of the easiest and safest ways to get started and works to prepare the body for more vigorous exercise. Here are suggestions on ramping up that post natal walking program and there is no excuse since you can walk inside on a treadmill.

· Start Slow: Keep speeds around 2 – 3 mph in the beginning to build a slow caloric burn and limit stress to the body. As strength and endurance increase, pump up the speed for a more intense routine.

· Rise to the Occasion: Walking uphill increases resistance so muscles work harder and the body burns more calories, according to Life Fitness. All of the equipment manufacturer’s treadmills are outfitted with a variety of programs that can adjust elevation throughout the workout. They work to keep both mind and body engaged.
· Create Your Own Mix: Add in elements that will keep you moving. Swing your arms in sharp, chopping arcs with your steps to increase intensity or pick up one-pound weights to increase resistance. Also get some extra spring in your step by building a music play list specifically for your walks.

*Let your body tell you when it’s ready to workout, but be sure to consult with your physician before starting any exercise program.
